The brief

Technology that supports the character of the church.

At St John’s Anglican Church in Taree, the sanctuary arch, stained glass and holy cross form the visual focus of worship. The parish wanted brighter, more adaptable lighting and the ability to change colour for services at different times of the church year.

The brief also brought together everyday AV needs: convenient laptop connectivity, presentation on the two nave monitors and a modern sound mixer integrated with the existing audio system.

ACCAV developed a coordinated lighting and AV upgrade around those requirements, combining dedicated LED fixtures, DMX control, digital audio mixing and a hardwired HDMI signal path.

The project is part of our Mid North Coast AV work and our wider church audio visual capability.

The approach

Three connected improvements for parish life.

Light the sanctuary

Six BeamZ LCB300 RGBW LED linear wash bars provide the sanctuary arch lighting. DMX control allows the colour and effect settings to be adjusted for different services.

Highlight the cross

Dedicated RGBW LED strip lighting, with its driver and power supply, gives the holy cross a distinct illuminated outline within the sanctuary.

Connect sound and screens

A Soundcraft Ui24R digital mixer updates the sound-control platform. The AV scope includes a hardwired HDMI connection from a laptop input to the two nave monitors, with audio fed into the existing sound system.

Lighting design

Colour control with a dedicated focus on the cross.

The sanctuary lighting uses six BeamZ LCB300 fixtures. Each bar combines 36 × 3 W RGBW LEDs in 12 controllable sections. The white channel supports neutral illumination alongside the red, green and blue colour mix.

A DMX192S controller provides the lighting-control interface. Dedicated RGBW strip lighting and a suitable driver illuminate the cross, complementing the broader wash across the sanctuary.

The installation scope includes fixture positioning, DMX and power interconnections, connectors and the leads needed to bring the lighting system together. This coordinated approach keeps the fixtures, control and cabling within one defined project scope.

Soundcraft Ui24R digital mixing

The rack-mounted Soundcraft Ui24R brings remotely accessible mixing to the church’s audio system. Its browser-based control allows an operator to manage the mix from a compatible connected device, supporting adjustment from a useful listening position within the venue.

The mixer upgrade works with the existing audio system. Integration includes audio routing and level checks, with a user manual supplied to support parish operation.

One laptop source, two nave displays

The presentation scope provides an HDMI input at an agreed location and a hardwired connection through a two-way splitter to the two monitors in the nave.

Audio from the HDMI source is routed into the church sound system. The commissioning scope includes image quality, signal routing, playback volume and lip-sync checks so video and sound can be assessed together.

Delivery and handover

Bringing lighting, video and audio together.

The project scope covers equipment supply, lighting installation and positioning, AV cabling, configuration and commissioning. Cabling is concealed where the existing building structure allows.

Installation

Position the lighting, connect the DMX and power infrastructure, integrate the mixer and establish the hardwired presentation connections.

System checks

Check lighting control, display image quality, source operation, audio routing and playback synchronisation as part of commissioning.

Parish handover

Provide a basic demonstration for nominated users, supporting equipment documentation and a clean handover of the work area.

The result

A more adaptable setting for worship.

The most visible result is the sanctuary’s ability to take on different colours while retaining the cross as its focal point. The supplied photographs show how the same space can move between a neutral white setting and coloured illumination.

Alongside the lighting, digital mixing and the planned hardwired presentation path address the practical work of running services: controlling sound, connecting a laptop and sharing content across the nave.

For churches considering a similar project, St John’s demonstrates the value of treating lighting, audio and presentation as a coordinated upgrade. Each element serves a clear purpose within the existing worship space.
